Speaker disallows privilege issue against fisheries minister

Chennai, Aug 3 (UNI) A privilege issue sought to be raised in the Tamil Nadu Assembly against Fisheries Minister K P P Samy was disallowed by Speaker R Avudaiyappan today.

Soon after the House met, Mr D Jayakumar (AIADMK) sought to raise the issue against the Minister in the wake of a judicial inquiry ordered by Madras High Court into a criminal complaint against him.

The High Court had ordered the inquiry by a District Magistrate following a complaint that the Minister and his relatives attacked residents of a fishermen's colony at Thiruvottiyur suburb immediately after the elections for reportedly not casting votes for him.

Contending that Mr Samy had violated the oaths administered as an MLA and a Minister under Schedule III of the Constitution, Mr Jayakumar sought the permission of the Speaker to move the privilege issue against the Minister.

However, Mr Avudaiyappan disallowed him to raise the issue.
