Plea for more facilities to Assam Rifles jawans

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) A plea for extending education, health, resettlement, CSD canteen and family quarter facilities to the Assam Rifles personnel on par with those of army personnel was made in the Lok Sabha today.

Initiating discussion on the Assam Rifles Bill 2006, Mr Bachi Singh Rawat(BJP) said Assam Rifles jawans, who are engaged in counter-insurgency operations and in security of the country, have to live under stress always as they are deprived of family quarter facilities and others like education to their children, health and resttlement facilities. They are often denied leave during posting on the borders.

He pleaded for CSD canteen facililties for ration and liquor to them like those given to ex-servicemen.

Supporting the provisions of the Bill, Mr Rawat suggested that the jawans should be exempted from payment of road tax and court fees. He also wanted special scholarships and special consideration in admission to their children.

The Assam Rifles Bill 2006, which has already been passed by the Rajya Sabha, was moved by Minister of State for Home E Raghupati, who said the Bill was intended to amend and consolidate the law relating to the governance of the Assam Rifles. It was an armed force of the Union to ensure the security of the border areas and to carry out coounter-insurgency operations in specified areas.
