Photo electoral rolls for the first time in TN Bypoll

Madurai, Aug 3 (UNI) Photo Electoral Rolls will be used for the first time in Tamil Nadu on a pilot basis in the byelection for the Madurai Central Constituency.

Talking to newspersons here today District Collector T Udhayachandran said that preparations were afoot to ensure 100 per cent coverage of EPIC and photo electoral rolls in the constituency with over 1.30 lakh voters.

Stating that the election with photo electoral rolls was being held as a pilot project, he said elaborate preparations were underway for its successful conduct. The Election Commission was very particular about this, he added.

Elaborating, Mr Uhayachandran said special offices would be established at 15 places to carry out additions and deletions in the voters list.

Only a marginal 15 per cent were yet to be covered for the photo rolls. To make the process free of discrepancies, photographs were being taken at the door steps, he added.

Since submission of bulk nomination papers for inclusion in the voters list had led to problems in the recent past, such practices by political parties would be no more entertained, it was pointed out. Additions and deletions would be made only after proper verification, he said.

With the Draft Electoral Roll ready to be released on August 11, applications on the prescribed format for additions and deletions could be submitted from that day onwards.

The final voters list would be released on August 31, he added.
