HC directs Centre to frame policy for sale of unbranded eatables

Chandigarh, Aug 3 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court division bench of acting Chief Justice Harjit Singh Bedi and Justice Ranjit Singh Randhawa has directed the Union government to frame a policy regarding the sale of unbranded eatables, including soft drinks while disposing of the two PILs.

The petitioners had sought directions to the Union government as also Punjab and Haryana governments to prevent the manufacture of unbranded eatables as also those which did not carry details of ingredients and expiry date.

The PILs were filed by Naresh Kadyan, an animal rights activist from Haryana and another, alleging that in many cases the manufacturers of eatables did not mention the ingredients or for that matter the expiry date. A regulatory mechanism for such manufacturers too was prayed.
