Four cops suspended on charges of rape

Chennai, Aug 3 (UNI) Four police personnel, including a Sub-Inspector (SI) and a woman constable, were suspended in connection with the case relating to the rape and torture of a minor girl at Mylapore area in the city.

Talking to newspersons here today Chennai City Police Commissioner Letika Saran said the suspended cops -- SI Murugesan, Head Constable Udaykumar, Constable Chandran and woman constable Senthamarai Selvi -- were cited as accused in the case.

She said the school records of the girl confirmed that the girl was a minor.

Ms Saran said cases of abduction and rape had been slapped against them.

Departmental action would also be initiated against them, she added.

The girl, daughter of a head constable, was abducted and married to Kovi kannan, against whom the police have also registered a case.

On the basis of a court directive, medical tests were conducted on the girl, which revealed that she was raped and subjected to torture.
