'Despite your word, goal posts being shifted'

New Delhi, Aug 3: Expressing concern that despite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assurance to the nation that the ''goal posts'' of the Indo-US nuclear deal will not be shifted, the BJP and the Left in the Rajya Sabha today said reports emanating from Washington suggest the contrary.

They demanded that the government should reassure the nation in this regard in the form of some resolution, motion or statement in Parliament.

The issue, which was raised by Ms Maya Singh (BJP) during the Question Hour, led to the adjournment of the House twice -- first till 1200 hrs, then till 1400 hrs.

The Prime Minister was present in the house when the issue was raised.

CPI(M) Member Sitaram Yechuri said some development were taking place which strongly indicate that the ''goal posts'' were being shifted.

''The Prime Minister had earlier assured that the country's implementation of its commitment under the July 18 declaration will depend upon the reciprocity of the US action, but the way the matter was being taken to International Atomic Energy Agency strongly indicates that there is some shift in its stand,'' he said.

Mr Yechuri made a demand, supported by the BJP, that the Prime Minister should reiterate what he had assured the House earlier.

''I suggest that the government should do this whether in the form of some motion resolution or sentiment,'' he said.
