'Aadi Perukku' festival observed with fervour
Tiruchirapalli, Aug 3 (UNI) Thousands of people from various parts of Tamil Nadu today congregated at the Cauvery river bed to celebrate the annual ''Aadi Perukku'' festival.
Every year, the festival is celebrated with traditional fervour on the 18th day of the Tamil month of ''Aadi''. People, especially newly weds celebrate the festival taking a holy bath and offering prayers to ''Mother Cauvery'' , who would herald prosperity and happiness.
Attired in new clothes, the newly wed women and others, along with their family members assemble at the historic bathing ghats like Ammamandapam, Ayyalamman, Odathurai, Chinthamani of the river and renew their 'Mangal Sutras' and set afloat the old ones.
Special poojas and other rituals are also arranged in all historic temples in the district on the occasion.
This year, the festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm, with the river brimming with water unlike the last few years.
Police and Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services departments have made elaborate arrangements.
