India-Myanmar agree on KMMP and TKKRP project

New Delhi, Aug 2 (UNI) The Government has decided to take up Kaladan Multi Modal Project (KMMP) and Tamu Kalewa-Kalemyo Road Projects (TKKRP) in Myanmar for improving the connectivity between Indian ports on the eastern coast and Sittwe Port in Myanmar.

Disclosing this in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project envisages connectivity between Indian ports on the eastern seaboard and Sittwe Port in Myanmar and then through riverrine transport and by road to Mizoram.

He said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Indian consultant has already received concurrence from the Myanmarese Government. Both sides have also agreed on the text of various legal instruments pertaining to the project. The project is estimated to cost around 105.4 million US Dollar. The Indian contribution will be 95.4 million Dollar.

Mr Ahamed said the Government is also proposing to extend a credit line of 10 million dollars to the Government of Myanmar to assist them in meeting their part of the contribution to the project. The upgradation of the 160 km long Tamu-Kalewa-Kalemyo road was completed in the year 2000 at a cost of Rs 120 crore. According to a Memorandum Understanding (MOU) signed between India and the Myanmar, the responsibility for the maintenance of the road lies with the Indian Government for which an annual grant of Rs 1.1 crore is being provided to the Border Road. Organisation (BRO). The Government has also approved an additional expenditure of Rs 51 crore for the resurfacing of the road, he added.
