Policemen in Kerala to work eight hours
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 1 (UNI) Eight hours and take the caps off, a new duty system for the policemen in Kerala.
The policemen in the state would now have eight-hour duty, with the new system coming into force from today on an experimental basis in select police stations.
The eight-hour duty was being implemented at the lower-level comprising head-constables and constables in 17 police stations in the state.
This was the second time that the Left Democratic Front government was introducing this duty system in police stations. Earlier in 1998, the E K Nayanar government had introduced the system in some police stations but was revoked when it was found impracticable.
State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who inaugurated the new duty system at the Cantonment police station here, asked the policemen to protect human rights.
The Minister said the new system, if found practical, would be introduced in all police stations in a phased manner.
The police stations in the state would be computerised, he said adding the existing vacancies would be filled immediately.
