Chennai, Aug 1 (UNI) The first unit of the 1000 MW Koodangulam Atomic Power Project will be commissioned during the current fiscal, Tamil Nadu Power Minister, Arcot N Veerasamy announced in the Assembly today.

Moving the demand for grants for his department, he said Tamil Nadu would stand to get a share of 463 MW from the project.

He said the 2 x 220 MW Kaiga Atomic Power Project, Stage-II, would also be commissioned in 2006-07 and the state would get its share of 103 MW of power.

Mr Veerasamy said the state was without power cuts and load shedding due to efficient handling and maximising thermal generation and purchase of additional power. The anticipated demand during the current year would be around 9,200 MW and the average daily consumption is expected to be around 162 million units, he added.

The increased demand would be met from the existing generating capacity and capacity additions, he said.

Stating that Tamil Nadu stood as the numero uno state in power generation from renewable energy soruces, he said the total installed capacity of power from renewable sources, including hydro power, was 3201 MW as on March 31 this year. This was about 40 per cent of the country's total installed capacity and 22 per cent of the total grid capacity of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) as against the National average of 5.5 per cent, he added.

Among various renewable energy sources- wind, solar and biomass and other forms of bio-energy were being harnessed in a big way in the State, he added.
