Irfan Habib and Jitendra Roy to be presented Ahmed Memorial awards

Kolkata, Aug 1 (UNI) The CPI (M) will confer Muzaffar Ahmed memorial awards to noted historian Irfan Habib and Bengali writer Jitendra Nath Roy this year.

The party would observe the 118th birth anniversary of Mr Ahmed with host of programmes on August five at Salt Lake and thereafter the award ceremony will be held at Mahajati Sadan in the evening, Left Front Chairman and CPI (M) state secretary Biman Basu told reporters here yesterday.

He said that Mr Habib was chosen for his famous English book ''People's History of India'' series and Mr Roy for Bengali book ''Technical Education''.

Former Chief Minister and veteran polit bureau member Jyoti Basu will present the awards.

Mr Basu said the party would also organise the 150th war of independence of 1857 beginning on August four and will end on 2007, in which many programme would be organised.
