New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) today signed an MoU with United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) to promote greater co-operation through the exchange of information and to increase awareness on the quality and safety of medicines.

The MoU was signed by IPC Chairman and Secretary (Health) in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Prasanna Hota and USP Executive Vice President and CEO Dr Roger L Williams.

The MoU will facilitate communication and activity to obtain necessary information and chemicals to develop science-based monographs, reference standards of mutual interest and promote collaboration on testing for reference standards. It will also pave way for exchange of scientific personnel between IPC and USP.

"Greater co-ordination and complementarity in the activities of the two pharmacopoeias would promote the interests of patients in both countries," Mr Hota said.

"With the signing of this MoU, we look forward to collaborate with IPC as we seek to reach the overarching goal of providing 'good pharmaceutical care for all,'' Dr Williams said.

IPC is a standard setting authority for drugs in the country while USP is a non-government organisation which sets yardsticks for drugs sold in the USA.
