Husband gets life imprisonment for murdering wife

New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) A city court today sentenced a 35-year-old-man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife in Defence colony of South Delhi eight years ago.

After hearing the arguments of both the prosecution and the defence, Patiala House Court Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) S P Garg, held Suraj Pal guilty of murdering his wife Somwati in 1998 and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The court further slapped a fine of Rs 1000 on Suraj Pal.

On the intervening night of October 1-2, 1998, Suraj Pal demanded money from Somwati to drink liquor and when she objected to it, Suraj Pal stabbed her in stomach and other parts of the body to death. The prosecution examined 19 witnesses in the case.

Suraj Pal was arrested on August 1, 2002 after a complaint filed by his son Santosh.

''The convict had intended to commit the murder of the deceased by causing such bodily injuries which were sufficient to cause her death in the ordinary course of nature,'' Mr Garg said in his order.

Suraj Pal was convicted under section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
