Mumbai, Aug 1 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today directed that status quo be maintained with respect to the construction of a housing complex that is proposed to be built under the Slums Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme.

The court's order came in the wake of a petition by a builder who had alleged that despite being appointed to construct Shri Saibaba Nagar Co-op Housing Society at Lower Parel in 2003 after an agreement with the slum dwellers under the SRA scheme, his appointment was terminated at the instance of gangster-turned politician Arun Gawli and his nephew Sachin Ahir.

The petitioner alleged that Gawli and Ahir were not residents of the affected plot and yet they had influenced the SRA to appoint another builder.

A division bench comprising justices F I Rebeillo and V K Tahilramani, in their order, said the ''SRA Scheme has become a profitable business venture attracting persons who are forcing their decisions on slum dwellers by the posts they are holding or their past or present reputation''.

The court, while ordering the status quo, observed that it would have to examine whether it was desirable to have such influences exerted by persons who are not members of the appointed competent authorities.
