Bangalore, Aug 1 (UNI) The Karnataka Government proposes to declare 127 taluks in the Eastern and Southern parts of the State, which had not received rains, as drought-hit if the Rain God did not smile on the areas within a week, Revenue Minister Jagdish Shettar said today.

Talking to reporters here, he said that of the 127 taluks, 63, including the Chief Minister's constituency of Ramanagaram, had not received any rain and 64 received deficient rainfall.

Mr Shettar said the Government had taken all precautionary measures to face the flood situation in the State, arising out of the release of excess water from Maharashtra dams. More than 1,000 people have been shifted to safe places and rehabilitated from different parts of flood-hit areas. Several rehabilitation centres have been opened in Gulbarga district. Huge sugarcane crop loss was reported in Bagalkot and Bijapur districts.

He said the Government was planning to take a delegation led by the Chief Minister to the Centre within eight days to pressurise it to release Rs 300 crore for evacuating 66 flood-prone villages in Belgaum, Gulbarga, Koppal, Bagalkot and Raichur districts.
