Water recedes in rivers in Jamshedpur
Jamshedpur, Jul 31 (UNI) The water level of rivers Subarnarekha and Kharkai, swelled alarmingly yesterday due to releasing of water from Chandil and neighbouring Orissa's dams, was receding fast today as rains stopped and bright sunshine came out.
Water level of the twin rivers rose dangerously since yesterday morning due to incessant rains for the couple of days and opening up of sluice gates of the dams, submerged several low-lying areas like Jugsalai, Bagbera, Shastrinagar, Adityapur, Mango, Searikela in East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts.
Both the district administrations sounded an alert in view of imminent flood like situation in the catchments areas along side the rivers.
East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner N M Kulkarni, who visited the flood-hit areas said about 2,500 families were affected and 15,000 people were rendered homeless in the flash-flood.
Mr Kulkarni said a 16-member team has been formed to oversee the rescue work and camps were set up in at least ten places to provide succor and foods to the affected people.
However, no casuality was reported so far, Mr Kulkarni said and added Tata Steel also provided boats to rescue people trapped in the many marooned areas. He said the district administration also demanded Rs 25 lakhs from the Disaster Management Department of the state government for the relief and rescue work.
The heavy rains also caused water logging in many posh areas including Adarshanagar and Geetanjali Apartments and many shops in Bistupur areas.The gusty winds also uprooted several trees.
Jamshedpur M P Sunil Mahto,who rushed form Delhi yesterday and Jamshedpur (West) MLA, Saryu Rai also visited the affected areas and assured the affected people of all sorts of help.
