Sonia keen on strengthening Mahila Congress: Rani Satish
Bangalore, July 31 (UNI) In a bid to strengthen Mahila Congress, which had hitherto not been given the attention it deserved, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed representatives for the wing in all the States.
Karnataka Mahila Congress President and former Minister Rani Satish said those appointed as State incharge would visit the State every month and tour each district to strengthen the body and enroll women workers in the party in a big way.
Speaking to newspersons here today, Ms Satish said this was revealed by Ms Gandhi when Presidents and other representatives of Mahila Congress units of various States met her last month.
For Karnataka, Dr Kalpana Devi had been appointed as the in-charge of Mahila Congress and the former Parliamentarian would begin her monthly visits from August, she said.
Meanwhile, Ms Satish released the list of newly appointed General Secretaries, District unit Presidents and other office bearers for 24 districts in the State.
''We want to strengthen the women's wing and help the party bounce back to power in Karnataka. Though the ruling JD(S)-BJP combine, which is neck-deep in corruption, has lost the people's support, it will be the Congresswomen who will lead the party back to power whenever the next election is held,'' she said.
Ms Satish said counselling centres would be organised in party offices in various districts shortly to help women in distress due to family and other personal problems.
The announcement of today's list of office bearers and strengthening of the women's wing all over the State would help the Congresswomen to demand more representation in the elections, which had hitherto been biased against women, she added.
