Possibility of huge gas reserves in deep sea
Jaisalmer, July 31 (UNI) There are possibilities of finding huge gas reserves in deep sea, icebergs surrounding India on three sides.
If the National Gas Hydrate Programme initiated to hit upon the gas reserves become successful, then India will not have to depend on other countries for its oil and gas requirement.
S. K Patra, director, research and development, Oil India Limited (OIL) told UNI that agreements have been signed with US and Japan as they have the requisite technical knowhow to drill out gas hydrate from the deep sea which India lacks till now.
Mr Patra said Oil and National Gas Commission and other national oil companies are involved in the National Gas Hydrate Programme and each of the companies have a specific role in the project.
He, however, said the programme is in the initial stages and till now only the way of finding the gas hydrates have been completed. No decision has been taken on the way of drilling out the gas.
He said when the government allots gas hydrate blocks, OIL will file its tender. The company is, meanwhile, geting ready to file its tender in the production of cold methane gas reserves.
