Srinagar, July 31 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights (HR) Commission Chairman Justice (retd) Ali Mohammad Mir today resigned from his post.
''Yes, I have resigned from the chairmanship of the HR commission,'' Justice Mir told UNI.
He said he had sent a resignation letter to Governor Lt General (Retd) S K Sinha citing reasons for the resignation.
''I found Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad very serious during the ten-minute meeting last week, but he was not aware about the functions of the commission,''he added.
He said the state government was not serious about the functioning of the commission and now they had appointed a three-member sub-committee which will monitor the recommendations and implementation of the commission.
''Since I took over as chairman of the commission about 30 months ago, not a single recommendation of the commission has been implemented by the government,'' he said.
He said it took the commission months to reach to any conclusion on Human Rights violation cases and the verdict were also delayed.
''From day one, I was urging the government to strengthen the commission for speedy justice to people,'' but nothing happened ''forcing me to resign'', he said.
He said the Human Rights situation in the state had worsened.
Justice Mir said the State Human Rights Commission was an eyewash.
He said in the resignation letter he had mentioned that he found the commission of no use thereby he was resigning from the post.
The state government recently appointed a three-member committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig to monitor the recommendation and implementation of the State Human Rights Commission.
The committee held its first meeting recently and said those violating the Human Rights would be punished as per the law.
