Delimitation of Maharashtra finalised, now to law dept

Mumbai, July 31 (UNI) Delimitation of the Maharashtra assembly and Lok sabha constituencies has been finalised by the Delimitation Commission and a notification to this effect would be sent to the law ministry of the Union government and finally will reach the President for the final order.

''No change will take place now in the delimitations of the constituencies that have taken place'', said Chief Electoral officer U P S Madan and state election commissioner Nandlal while talking to reporters here today.

Mr Madan said earlier there were 22 reserved assembly constituencies for ST while now there will be 25 constituencies.

He further said in the delimitation; the number of reserved constituencies of scheduled castes has gone up from 18 to 29.

However the number of total assembly segments remains 288.

As far as Lok Sabha is concerned, there were three constituencies reserved for SC but now the figure has gone to five on the other hand, the number of scheduled tribe constituencies remain four even after delimitation. In all there are 48 Lok sabha constituencies in Maharashtra.

Earlier Buldhana, Osmanabad and Pandharpur were reserved constituencies for SC in Lok sabha now there will be Amravati, Ramtek, Shirdi, Latur and Solapur reserved for the same.

The number of constituencies reserved for ST though remains the same the constituencies stands changed. Earlier, they were Ahanu, Malegaon, Dhule and Nandurbar and now it will be Gadchiroli-Chimur, Dindori, Palghar and Nandurbar.

As Yavatmal Lok Sabha constituency's part was merged with Washim, the name of Washim Lok Sabha constituency has been changed to Yavatmal- Washim constituency.

Mr Madan said the total number of electors in the state has touched the figure of 6,64,67,465 after the addition of nearly 12.84 lakh names.
