Rain plays havoc in Gujarat; claims 12 lives, season's toll 34
Ahmedabad, July 30 (UNI) Normal life has been thrown out of gear in major cities, town and villages of Gujarat as rains played havoc claiming over a dozen lives in the last 36 hours and forcing evacuations of thousands of people.
According to the official sources here today, the deaths were due to drowning, striking of lightnings and building or land collapses.
With 12 more people dying in the current spell of monsoon, the total death toll in this season has risen to 34.
In rain-related incidents, at least five people have lost their lives in Petlad taluka of Anand district in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, a body of an aged person was fished out from a lake in Chharni area of the Vadodara city today.
The authorities have evacuated more than 25,500 people from low-lying areas in South and Central Gujarat following heavy rains in the region, even as an alert was sounded in the villages on the banks of River Narmada, official sources said.
