Patil announces Rs 1,000 compensation each to flood affected

Sangli, Maharashtra, July 30 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil today announced a compensation of Rs 1,000 each to the flood-affected people.

Accompanying Sangli District Guardian Minister Patangrao Kadam, Patil told reporters here that he has directed the government machinery in the district to initiate rescue and releif operations as a precautionary measure.

Four villages--Shirgaon, Sukhawadi, Chopadewadi, Mauje Degraj-- in the district have been marooned, and boats have been pressed into service to rescue the affected people, he said.

About 64,821 people from 13,115 families of 35 villages in Sangli district have been shifted to safer places till tonight, and the rescue operation is still on.

70,000 cusecs of water have been released from the Koyana dam. As the intensity of rains have reduced today, the flood-like situation will reduce by tomorrow, he hoped.
