Incessant rains drench UP; rain-related toll reaches 122
Lucknow, July 30 (UNI) One more person was killed today as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed several areas of Uttar Pradesh, taking the death toll in rain-related incidents during this season to 122.
The victim drowned in Sai river, which is in spate, in Jaunpur.
Incessant rains unleashed their fury in most parts of the state, resulting in the overflow of several rivers and dipping of the mercury levels there.
The water level of major rivers showed a rise following heavy rains in the catchment areas, though some of them were still flowing below the danger mark.
According to the Central Water Commission, the Ghagra river was flowing five cm above the danger mark whereas in Ayodhya its level was 18 cm above and in Turtipar it was flowing 46 cm below the danger level.
The level of the Sharda river was four cm below the danger mark in Paliankala and in Banbasa the level of the river was 24 cm below it.
According to reports from Balrampur, heavy rains forced people from their houses and affected normal life there.
The rains also hampered normal life in Agra.
In Lakhimpur, the Sharda river wreaked havoc there, resulting in more than 100 incidents of house collapse. The authorities have started rescue and relief operation there.
Fafamau received the maximum three cm of rainfall while Mirzapur and Ghazipur got 2 cm of rains each, the met department said.
According to the department, most parts of the state will receive heavy to very heavy rains during the next 24 hours.
