Rotary Madras, Mumbai resurrect fishing hamlet

Chennai, July 29 (UNI) The Rotary Club of Madras, in association with the Rotary Club of Mumbai, resurrected a fishing hamlet at Sulerikattukuppam in Kancheepuram district by building 146 permanent shelters with a total outlay of Rs 6.50 crores.

The well-designed shelters were handed over today to the families by Tamil Nadu-local administration Minister M K Stalin, in the presence of labour minister T M Anbarasan, district collector Pradeep and Rtn J B Kamdar.

The Rotarians also provided Vocational rehabilitation as well as permanent rehabilitation for the victims of the tsunami that struck the Tamil Nadu Coast on December 26 2004.

The Rotary club also provided 44 mechanised boats, at a total cost of Rs 88 Lakhs, two life jackets, two fishing nets and one life buoy.

The club has now embarked upon building a primary school, refrigeration plant and a multi-purpose Hall at a cost of Rs 42 lakh. The construction has already started.

Apart from the above, the club has planned to build a hospital on the western side of East Coast Road that would cost approximately Rs 1.75 crores. The land for this has been allotted by the state government.

Speaking on the occasion Mr M K Stalin congratulated the Rotary Club of Madras for having done great humanitarian work when required and for completing the work in record time. He called for more cooperation between the Government and the Rotary in future.
