Nano materials can revolutionise cardiac treatment: Nair

Bangalore, July 29 (UNI) Nano technology and ultra modern techniques like micro robots should be used to revolutionise cardiac treatment in the country, ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair has said.

Speaking after launching '64 slice CT Scan' at Narayana Hrudayalaya here yesterday, he said nano technology could be used to deliver chemicals to any part of the body.

He called for innovations in the field of developing Micro Robots as it could be used to transfer chemicals to remove unwanted substances in arteries and blood vessels.

Dr Nair said, ''The United States and the EU have now recognised the capabilities of Indian doctors and scientists in heartcare. We should equip ourselves in the use of most modern methodologies and innovations in this field. Any complex problem can be tackled by breaking it to small modules,'' he added.

He said Tele Cardiology Network, developed by ISRO based on the vision of President A P J Abdul Kalam, in association with well known medical institutions using the country's satellite network, was successfully treating poor people suffering from heart ailments in remote areas, including the North East. As many as 22,000 heart operations had so far been conducted with the help of the network, he added.

Narayana Hrudayalaya Chairman Devi Shetty said the hospital, which had launched a tele cardiology network in India, Malaysia and Ethiopia, would extend it to the African countries in the near future.

Narayana Hrudayalaya had emerged as one of the largest hospitals in conducting heart valve implants in the world, he added.
