MP to construct 1.20 lakh houses for urban poor
Bhopal, July 29(UNI) Under an innovative scheme to provide environment-friendly shelter to urban poor, about 1.20 lakh houses will be constructed in Madhya Pradesh in two years under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and Integrated Housing and Slums Development Programme.
The scheme costing Rs 1152 crore was approved at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan here yesterday.
Under the scheme, to be completed by June 2008, the Union Government's share is Rs 645 crore, while the state government will contribute Rs 207 crore and the local bodies Rs 203 crore.
The beneficiaries will contribute a total of Rs 96 crore at the rate of 12 per cent of each unit's construction cost of Rs 80,000.
However, the share of ST, SC and OBC category beneficiaries besides handicapped has been fixed at 10 per cent.
The houses would be constructed on multi-storied pattern of G plus 3 model. Each unit covering 250 sq feet area will have two rooms, kitchen and a toilet.
Besides the construction cost, Rs 16,000 per unit would be spent on infrastructure facilities like road, drinking water, drainage and light.
At present, 58.21 lakh people reside in about 5800 slum areas having more than 2.59 lakh shanties. The number of permanent patta holders is 1.46 lakh while 21,854 people have temporary pattas.
Under JNNURM, one lakh houses would be constructed on 500 acre land. About 50,000 houses would be constructed in Indore city alone, besides 35,000 in Bhopal, 10,000 in Jabalpur and 5,000 in Ujjain.
Under integrated housing and slum development programme, a total of 20,000 houses would be constructed on 100 acre area. Of this, 9300 houses will be constructed in Gwalior, 500 units each in nine municipal corporations and seven local bodies having over one lakh population, while 100 units each would be constructed in other 27 district headquarters. Development authorities and urban local bodies would be involved in the construction work.
