Man attempts self-immolation at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) A man from Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, tried to immolate himself at the historic Jantar Mantar after camping there for over four months seeking action by the authorities to free his 'abducted' wife and child.

Thirty-five-year-old Rajnish Kumar set himself on fire after pouring kerosene at around 1500 hrs. A Delhi Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Kamal Singh intervened and doused the fire but in the process received burn injuries himself, police said.

Both Kumar and the policeman were admitted to R M L Hospital.

Kumar's condition was stated to be serious.

A case of attempt to commit suicide had been registered against Kumar, who had been sitting on a 'dharna' since March 25.
