Karnataka government brings sheep under insurance scheme

Hubli, July 29 (UNI) The Karnataka government has brought 9,40,000 sheep belonging to those falling under below poverty line (BPL) under insurance, according to state animal husbandry minister Revu Nayak Belamagi.

Addressing a press conference here today, the minister said the government was also considering to bring sheep owners also under insurance cover. Under the scheme, the sheep owner has to pay Rs.10 per sheep and the government would contribute Rs.50 per sheep.

This year 200 primary animal husbandry hospitals in the state would be upgraded at a cost of Rs.6.80 crore.

The minister said steps had been taken to fill up the vacancies of doctors in the hospitals for which the state cabinet has already approved the appointment of 577 doctors.

To another question, Mr Belamagi said that 69 hospitals would be opened this year in 13 taluks identified as backward taluks by Dr Nanjundappa committee on regional imbalance, in Belgaum, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur, Koppal and Bidar districts for which an amount of Rs 8 crore would be provided.

It is also proposed to provide 20 acres of land and an assistance of Rs.10 lakh to conserve the local cow breed to any institutions that come forward, he said.

The government has also provided Rs 5 crore to set up Graameen Nirvahane Haagu Adalit Samsthe at Bangalore on the lines of IRMA of Gujarat, the minister added.
