Inquiry Commission on "land grabbing issue" unnecessary: Vaiko
Chennai, July 29 (UNI) Rallying to the support of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha on the alleged ''land grabbing issue'', MDMK General Secretary Vaiko today said the Inquiry Commission constituted by the State Government to go into the matter was ''unnecessary'' as the bungalow, used by her as rest house, was not located on the disputed site.
In a statement here, he said a fact-finding committee, comprising party functionaries and legislators, visited the Siruvathur village in Kancheepuram district on July 28 and interacted with villagers including a large number of women.
From the villagers' account and documents collected from the Revenue department, it had been proved that the farm house, used by Ms Jayalalitha, was not located on the land said to be distributed to Dalits in 1967 by the then Chief Minister C N Annadurai, he said.
It may be recalled that the Left parties and a few Dalit organisations had been agitating that 53 acres of lands given to Dalits and landless labourers at Siruthavur were usurped by some ''influential persons'' close to Ms Jayalalitha.
The huge farm house at Siruthavur, where Ms Jayalalitha used to stay occasionally, was also in the eye of storm following the controversy. However, the AIADMK supremo had stated that the bungalow was not her property and she had only taken it for rent.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday last announced in the State Assembly that an Inquiry Commission, headed by retired High Court judge K P Sivasubramaniam, would go into the issue and submit a report within two months.
