Fatal explosion at Turkish barracks caused by gas

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, July 29 (Reuters) An explosion at a military barracks in southeast Turkey today which killed four soldiers was caused by gas, the provincial governor told reporters.

Separately, Turkish media reported a bomb exploded in the western port city of Izmir yesterday night, injuring four people.

The explosion in the barracks in the southeastern province of Van -- an area where Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants often carry out attacks -- also injured 11 soldiers.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the PKK's two-decade campaign for a homeland in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey.
