Eye care hospital on E M By-pass to come up

Kolkata, July 29 (UNI) An eye care hospital with a cost of Rs 7 crore will be set up on 44,000 sq ft of land at Mukundapur, E M By-pass, near here within six months.

Madurai based Arvind Eye hospital will provide the technical back up for the project.

The proposed state-of-the-art eye hospital, to be named 'Mahavir Seva Sadan Vision Care' will be dedicated to the poor and needy patients of Eastern India and neighbouring countries, said Dr Alok Roy, Chairman of Eastern India Healthcare Foundation.

Eastern India Healthcare Foundation has signed an agreement with Vision Care Education Research Foundation, a charitable trust, for setting up the 500-bed hospital.

Dr Roy, who has helped set up 17 other hospitals across the the country, said the hospital will have two fully equipped operation theaters (Phase I) for undertaking latest kinds of cataract surgeries like Phacoemulsification or SICS and also complex retinal operation like corneal transplantation and trauma related problems.

The Outpatient department will have diagnostic facilities like Humpherey Visual Fields, YAG Laser, Diode and Green Laser, Fundus Flourescein Angiography (FFA), among other latest advancements in the arena of eye care.

The hospital will have adequate facilities to accommodate 500 OPD patients and will be able to perform 100 eye operations a day.

Secretary of Mahavir Seva Sadan R S Singhi assured that all poor patients with cataract and glaucoma problems will be treated free of cost.

An estimated 20 million blind people are in India, which amounts to one-fourth of the blind population worldwide. The main reasons of blindness in India are Cataract and Glaucoma.
