DU refuses to be Commonwealth partner, IOA looks to GoM
New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) Clearly embarrassed after Delhi University (DU) backed out despite committing to host the acquatic and rugby events of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, organisers have their hopes pinned on the Arjun Singh-led Group of Ministers (GoM) to find a way out of the imbroglio.
''I have received a letter in which DU authorities said they need to build a new complex on the proposed venue for acquatics. I'm surprised that six months after committing to us, they decided to back out. This is just not done. But there is a GoM under Arjun Singh and let them take a decision first,'' Chairman of the 2010 Games organising committee Suresh Kalmadi told reporters here today.
''It was because of the request from the students community that we though to hold the swimming and rugby events there. Subsequently, the technical survey was conducted and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) officials also visited and okayed the venue.
''Six months after that, I got a letter from DU Vice-Chancellor and saying they were backing out. I've written to them that they just can't do that,'' Mr Kalmadi said.
He, however, allayed fears about the venues and said everything was in order.
''All venues have been finalised and there is no need to worry.
we have the stand-byes in place as well and everything is just perfect,'' Mr Kalmadi added.
