Da Vinci robotic surgical system at AIIMS

New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) Da Vinci, a four-armed robotic surgical system has come to the aid of 12-year-old Ranjan Kumar suffering from kidney blockage.

A surgeon, seated at a console, performed the operation on Kumar at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here yesterday.

The Department of Urology at the Institute has become the first in Asia to acquire the state-of-the-art system.

Urology department Professor Dr A K Hemal said robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery has the advantages of three dimensional view, magnification, and freedom of movement than the conventional procedures.

Da Vinci will also help perform advanced surgical procedures like Radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, Radical Cystectomy for bladder cancer and pyloplasty for congenital pelviureteric junction obstruction.
