Coast Guard rescues 25 crewmembers of a Panama vessel

Ahmedabad, July 29 (UNI) The Indian Coast Guard have rescued 25 crewmembers on board a Panama merchant vessel that ran aground off the Porbandar coast yesterday, a Coast Guard statement said today.

The 150-metre long, 21-metre wide bulk carrier, laden with 180 metric tonnes of marine gas oil and 40 metric tonnes of high speed diesel (HSD) ran aground after experiencing main engines failure following extreme rough weather prevailing in the Gujarat coast.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai and the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC), Porbandar picked up the distress signals from the vessel, M V Christena-II and a ICG team from Porbandar was rushed to the site, which evacuated all the crewmembers. They were later handed over to the police for further investigation.
