Tirupati Revenue Division set for phase 1 polls

Tirupati, July 28 (UNI) The stage is set for the first phase of the sarpanch and ward elections in Tirupati Revenue Division in Chittoor district, tomorrow.

While 698 sarpanch candidates are in the fray for 259 Gram Panchayats, 2876 candidates are contesting for 1315 ward posts in Tirupati Revenue Division.

Of the 397 Panchayats notified in the division, polling would not be held in seven places due to various reasons. While 131 sarpanches were elected unanimously, 2165 candidates were unanimously declared elected in 3480 ward member posts.

As many as 4,64,352 voters would exercise their franchise and services of 7,532 polling personnel would be utilised in 1315 polling booths.

According to District Superintendent of police V Gopalakrishna, elaborate security arrangments were made to ensure free and fair polls in Tirupati Division.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 was promulgated from last evening and all liquor shops and bars have been ordered to close in the Tirupati Division limits by the excise officials.

The second phase of elections in the district, would be held on August two. As many as 2,843 candidates were in the fray for 452 sarpanch posts and 6,490 candidates for 4,091 ward member posts. In the final phase on August six elections would be held for 491 sarpanch posts and 5,092 ward posts in Madanapalli Revenue Division.
