Police give a twist to Tania Banerjee murder
Kolkata, Jul 27: In a twist to the murder episode of Tania Banerjee, a Bangalore call centre employee, Kolkata police today claimed that the girl was arrested last year on the charge of being involved in a sex racket.
"Tania was arrested on August 31, 2005, from a south Kolkata house for being involved in a sex racket. Two more persons, including a woman, were also arrested under the Immoral Trafficking Act," a high official of Kolkata police said.
He said the arrested were produced in Alipore court and subsequently police chargesheeted them. However, they were later released on bail.
The official said the kingpin of the sex racket Jason Anthony was arrested was subsequently. Anthony had contacts with call centre girls in Bangalore and Kolkata. "Girls from Bangalore call centres used to visit Kolkata on hefty payments by clients," the official said.
Tania's body, with multiple stab injuries, was found on the highway near Sakleshpur in Hassan district of Karnataka yesterday.
One of his colleagues, nabbed by police, later confessed to have committed the murder.
The 32-year-old Tania, who hailed from Bali in West Bengal's Howrah district, was a trainee employee of AVIVA Customer Operational Services on the outskirts of Bangalore. She had joined the firm in June.
