Kerala to take up Mullaperiyar issue after legal opinion

Kannur, July 28 (UNI) Kerala Irrigation Minister N K Premachandran today said the Supreme Court's dismissal of the Kerala Government's petition in raising the water level of Mullaperiyar dam was unfortunate, and said the Government would take further steps after consulting legal experts.

Talking to reporters here, he said the Advocate General was in consultation with the Supreme Court standing counsel. The Kerala Government had enacted a legislation for constituting a Dam Safety Authority and as per the law, the water level could be raised only with the permission of this Authority.

The SC yesterday dismissed Kerala Government's petition to the Supreme Court seeking review of its verdict permitting raising of the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam from 136 ft to 142 ft.

The court also asked the Kerala government to permit Tamil Nadu to carry out necessary repairs before raising the water level to 142 ft.
