Karaikal region neglected: MDMK MLA

Pondicherry,July 28 (UNI) MDMK legislator from Thirunallar in Karaikal region of the Union Territory P R Siva today alleged that the region was neglected.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Siva said the previous government had neglected Karaikal region and it was expected that there would be some announcement for the development of the region in the Lt Governor's address.However,it was stated in the address that priority would be given for the construction of a play ground in Karaikal .The announcement was there for several years and no steps were taken to execute it, he said.

Mr Siva also pointed out that Karaikal students were getting only 20 seats out of the 421 seats in the Pondicherry Engineering college whereas the demand was to provide one third of the seats to the region.

Stating that Karaikal was worst hit by the tsunami and even after 20 years not even a single permanent house was constructed in the region, he said 285 temperory houses constructed for the tsunami victims were also gutted in a fire.

He also alleged that all the industrial units were polluting the atmosphere and there was no job opportunity for the locals as labourers were being brought from the state where owner of the factory belonged.

Recently police had rescued 300 bonded labourers from Orissa, working in a factory owned by a person hailing from Orissa, he added.

He said if the government continued to neglect the region, people would be forced to organise agitations.
