Heavy rains lash Gujarat

Ahmedabad, July 28 (UNI) With heavy rains lashing many parts of Gujarat in the last 24 hours, over 75 talukas received a good amount of rainfall today.

According to the Emergency Response Centre sources here, barring five districts, all the other districts of the state received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The sources said in the last eight hours, that is from 0800 to 1600 hrs, over 75 talukas of the state received rainfall from one to five inches (26.5 to 133 mm). However, districts like Patan, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Jamnagar and Kutch did not received any rainfall.

The weather office has predicted heavy downpour in all major parts of Gujarat in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, according to reports reaching here from Rajkot, a two-year-old boy was killed and two others injured when two kutchha houses were collapsed in heavy downpur at Asodar village in Amreli district, as moderate to heavy rains continued to lash many parts of the Saurashtra region during the last 24 hours.

The incident took place late last night. when the family members of Yakub Sindibhai and Zubedaben were sleeping in their houses, the roofs of their houses suddenly caved in following heavy downpour.

In the incident, the minor, Aspak Dilavar, died, while the injured were admitted to primary health centre at Lathi.

Rajkot city today recorded 9 mm of rainfall till 1730 hrs, taking the season's total to 300 mm, weathermen said.

Una taluka of Junagadh district recorded 250 mm of rainfall in past ten hours, while Talala received 65 mm, a report from Junagadh said.

Khambhalia, Kalyanpur and Dwaraka in Jamnagar district recorded rainfall ranging from 25 mm to 75 mm rainfall, a report from Jamnagar said.

Elsewhere in Saurashtra, light to moderate of rainfall was reported.

There has been no significant increase in the water-level of dams in Rajkot, Surendranagar and Jamnagar districts, sources in irrigation flood control room said.

Meanwhile, a report from Surat said heavy rains continued in many parts of South Gujarat, including Surat, Valsad, Navsari and Dangs districts, district information sources said.

In Surat, various talukas have received an average rainfall of 120 mm till 0800 hrs this morning, district flood control room sources said.

In Valsad district, many talukas witnessed heavy rainfall from 0800 hrs to 1400 hrs today, an official communique informed.

Valsad Kaprada received 78 mm, Valsad taluka got 83 mm, Dharampur taluka got 60 mm, Umargam got 51 mm and Pardi taluka received 62 mm, sources said.

Heavy rains are likely in many parts of the South Gujarat in next 48 hours, sources added.
