Canadian high commissioner calls on Amarinder
Chandigarh, July 28 (UNI) A four-member delegation led by Canadian High Commissioner Mrs Lucie Edwards today called on Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and expressed the hope that the ongoing bilateral sharing of technology and expertise and rich experience in the fields of agriculture and bio-technology would benefit the economies of the two countries.
Taking part in the deliberations Capt Singh assured full support and cooperation in the transfer technology mission between the Punjab and the Canadian Governments. Showing deep concern over the fraudulent matrimonial cases of the Punjabi NRIs settled in Canada and elsewhere across the world, Capt Singh assured the visiting delegation that he would take up this matter with Ministry of Economic Affairs to advise the Indian High Commissioners based in the countries dominant by Punjabi population to prepare a data of Punjabi NRIs so that such cases could be tackled effectively.
He asked Mrs Edwards to also supply a data regarding the erring grooms and bridegrooms settled in various parts of Canada who had solemnized fake marriages just to defraud their spouses to enable the State administration to take a stern action against them as per the law.
Responding to the request of Mrs Edwards, the Chief Minister agreed to send a high-powered delegation led by Health and Family Welfare Minister including the members of NGOs and the official of State Health Department to participate in the World AIDS Conference to be held in Canada in August 2006 to take effective steps to curb the menace of AIDS which was posing a great threat to the lower strata of the society infested with wide spread illiteracy and poverty.
Mrs Edwards was here on the courtesy call as her term expires shortly. She was accompanied by her husband, Mr. Tom Roach, besides Donna Capper and Mr. Gurbans Sobti both from Canadian Consulate Chandigarh.
