Bajaj calls for more representation of businessman in Parliament

New Delhi, July 28 (UNI) Newly-elected Rajya Sabha member and well known industrialist Rahul Bajaj has called for larger representation of businessmen in Parliament, for enabling the industry to project its concern and help regulatory mechanism in law making.

''Industry that contributes heavily to the national GDP and creates employment opportunities should have a respected place in the society provided there is a larger representation of businessmen in the law making institutions,'' Mr Bajaj said.

Speaking at the Felicitation Ceremony organised by Assocham here yesterday on his election to the Rajya Sabha, he said in post-independence, only one industrialist has been selected to the Upper House of Parliament which is totally unadequate.

He quoted the example of Hindustan Times Chairman Shobha Bhartia, saying she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from the journalist sector, even though she owns a large industrial house.

However, he said while bureaucracy, politicians and even media are respected, industry is still looked down upon.
