ASI initiates repair work on Canon in TN

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu July 28 (UNI) The Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) has taken up the repair and plastering of the entire base structure of Canon known as 'Birangimedu' near Palace in Thanjavur town.

According to sources here the Canon base was constructed by Nayak rulers in 16th century and was considered to be the biggest Canon in Tamil Nadu, which is made up of 26 ft long.

An important aspect of the Canon is that it was kept on open space on the top of structure.

The Nayak rulers had also used the canon for defence purposes in Fort area around Palace.
