37 inducted under Speed Fund Academy scheme
Chandigarh, July 28 (UNI) The Punjab Department of Sports has inducted 37 budding boys and girls under the Speed Fund Academy for the session 2006-2007.
Seven athletes and 10 judokas have been selected for the Speed Fund Academy, Ludhiana. Besides, weightlifter Baljit Singh has been inducted into the SFA Ludhiana, as a day scholar.
Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh disclosed here today that those selected for track and field events for Ludhiana were Satinder Singh, Ajaypal Singh, Inderjit Singh, Jagseer Singh, Amandeep Singh, Gagandeep Singh and Sukhdev Singh.
The judokas selected for the SFA Ludhiana are: Sanjay Kumar, Parveen Kumar, Navchetan Singh, Rajnish Sharma, Anil Joda, Vishal Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Tek Raj, Karandeep Thakur and Amrit.
Twelve seats for athletes under the SFA scheme have been allotted to HMV College, Jalandhar, Layalpur Khalsa College for Men Jalandhar, Sports and Arts College Jalandhar and Saint Soldier, College, Jalandhar.
Weightlifter Paramjit Kaur has been selected for the HMV College, Jalandhar SFA scheme.
Pargat Singh said that a number of players of the academy have already made a mark at international level and have established national records since the scheme came into existence in 1993. The Punjab Governement created a corpus Rs one crore to establish the Speed Fund Academy (Small Saving Endowments) for promotion and development for excellence in sports for the players to excel at the international level.
In the initial stages sports disciplines like lawn tennis and table tennis were introduced in the scheme. As the results given under the scheme were encourge, it was decided to include more sports disciplines in 1999. New games included were athletics, gymnastics, cycling, badminton, judo, weightlifting and hockey.
The players are picked up through selection trials by an expert committee at the state level. The sportsmen admitted inthe academy are trained and provided facilities with an eye to get medals at the international level. Each players is provided a diet of Rs 100 per day per head, free accommodation, free education, medical support, free transport and a sports kit worth of Rs 10,000 per annum.
Domestic and international competitions exposure is also admissible to the players.
The day scholars in the scheme are provided a lump sum amount of Rs 5500 per month to meet expenditure towards diet, equipment, transport, education, medical etc.
