Union demand secure environment for international trade
Imphal, July 27 (UNI) The Indo-Myanmar Border Trader's Union has demanded secure environment to carry out international trade between India and Myanmar through Moreh in Manipur.
About 22 items had been allowed to be exchanged between the two countries.
Union Secretary, Information Th Rolivin said 'unwanted' activities had increased in Moreh, which he felt, were detrimental to business and trade.
It might be noted that insurgency is at its peak in the border areas. Commercial rivalry between different people and ethnic tension were all working against the interest of the traders.
More than 10,000 people were engaged in the border trade.
The Union also welcomed the proposal to increase the number of items which can be traded between the two countries. Most traders have suggested that rather than having a list of approved items, there should be a list of unapproved items like drugs which should not be allowed to trade.
Inclusion of more goods for export and import was a good step, it noted.
The Centre and the state government should promote trading to consolidate the social and economic gains from Moreh-route and prepare a new strategy and action plan for competitive performances he said.
