NFIW continues to pressurise Govt for women's reservation bill
New Delhi, July 27 (UNI) The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) today continued with its protests to press for their long-standing demand of implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures.
Planning Commission member Sayeda Hameed in her address to NFIW members, who are on a 17-day-long sit in here which began on July 24, said for multifaceted development of the nation, it is essential that women are represented in decision making bodies like Parliament and Assemblies.
''The redressal of the social problems will only be possible with the political participation of women and precisely for that reason, it is imperative to pass the bill,'' she added.
Human Rights activist Kavita Srivastav said the agitation will be intensified if the bill is not introduced in Parliament in the ongoing monsoon session.
''May be women have to gate crash into Parliament and Assemblies,'' she added.
NIFW has been building pressure, sometimes on its own and sometimes along with other women's organisations, on this issue since 1995.
