NEC to invest Rs 28 crore on power projects in NE

Aizawl, July 27 (UNI) The North Eastern Council (NEC) would invest Rs 28.8 crore for various power development schemes here to boost the power sector in the NE region.

For the thermal projects, NEC has fixed an outlay of Rs 12.6 crore for the 21 MW gas thermal project at Baramura in Tripura and Rs 90 lakhs for 80 MW hydro electric project at Bairabi in Mizoram, official sources said, here today.

Apart from the thermal projects, NEC would also invest Rs 13.5 crore for upgradation, improvement and construction of power transmission and distribution lines across the NE states.

It would spend Rs 45 lakh for preservation of reservoir of the existing hydro electric project, which includes control of siltation of Umiam lake in Meghalaya.

For Lakwa waste heat recovery project in Assam, the NEC has sanctioned Rs 1.35 crore.

Other power schemes such as Renewable Resources of Energy (RRE) programme were also taken up as demonstratable pilot projects by NEC in the NE Region.

Under this programme, various projects based on Bio-gas and Bio-mass, Solar-power, Wind energy and Micro-hydel would be taken up.

The scheme is being implemented through the state government agencies and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the NE sectors.

The NEC has also taken up three flood control schemes with a total estimated cost of Rs 510.77 lakh for safeguarding the surface communication ( Rail&Road ) and valuable agricultural land from continuous erosion and inundation.

The states being benefitted out of these schemes are Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura, the sources added.
