'N-deal with US to bridge energy demand in India'
New Delhi, July 27: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed confidence that the civil nuclear agreements, India has
entered with the United States and its discussions with Nuclear Suppliers' Group should help accelerate the development of nuclear energy in the country.
''The speed with which we can develop nuclear power is, of course, constrained by the availability of uranium'' the Prime Minister said while inaugurating an Energy Conclave here yesterday. Dr Singh expressed serious concern over the ''haemorrhage'' involved in transmission and distribution losses, which are as high as 40 to 50 per cent in several parts of the country, and stressed the need for new management strategies to cope with this harsh reality.
Referring to the gigantic future energy requirements and an investment of Rs 60 lakh crore needed in the power sector alone over next 25 years, the Prime Minister emphasised the need to develop public-private partnerships and provide energy services to the consumers at affordable cost.
