Mysore varsity undergoes re-accreditation by NAAC

Mysore, July 27 (UNI) The University of Mysore is second among the 300 varsities in the country to undergo the process of re-accreditation by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC), Goa varsity Vice Chancellor and NAAC Peer Committee Head P S Zacharias informed today.

Addressing newspersons here, he said the Committee, comprising 12 members, had assessed the Mysore varsity for the last two days and was satisfied with its present standards, infrastructure, research activities and museum. The varsity also had several other pockets of excellence, he added.

It was close to as good as being the best in the country, he said, adding that the Mysore varsity was among those holding the star status at present.

He informed that the star status would henceforth be replaced with grades like A++ (between 95 to 100 points) and A+ (90 to 95 points) and it would go on up to C grade.

Prof Zacharias said the committee would submit its report to the NAAC and in another two to three months, the grading would be announced.

To a question, he said it was left for the NAAC to decide on the grade. The committee would only make recommendations.

He informed that most of the universities in the country were facing financial problem to promote higher education. These varsities were making all out efforts to mobilise resources through various modes, including starting self-financing courses.

Prof Zacharias disclosed that in future, a quarter of the University Grants Commission (UGC) funds would be given only to accredited varsities. Of the 300 universities in the country, only 150 were accredited and of the 16,000 colleges, only 3000.
