Magic Academy to open asylum for aged magicians

Thiruvananthapuram, July 27: The Magic Academy here will establish an asylum for aged and sick magicians at KINFRA Film and Video Park, Kazhakkuttam in the district, its Executive Director Magician Gopinath Muthukad said today.

The proposed asylum, first of its kind in the country, would offer free shelter, medical treatment and other basic amenities to veteran magicians, who suffer from old age disablities and diseases, he told UNI.

The main aim of setting up such a project was to protect the Indian magic from exinction, he said adding that while offering shelters to them their skills could also be preserved and protected.

''The asylum will be a part of the proposed international magic theatre and Magic Academy Research Centre (MARC), a centre for conducting researches on magics to be set up at the KINFRA Park at a cost of Rs 75 lakh,'' he added.

Mr Muthukad said the centre would also offer rehabilitation to street magic communities who were thrown to an insecure life due to these days of fast growing cities and towns.

Generating fund for the Rs two crore project, the Magic Academy would organise magic festivals. Leading magicians in the country would conduct shows at various locations in and out of the state, he said.

''As the financial assistance, on a permanent or temporary mode, falls beyond the capacity of the Academy, the rehabilitation centre is hopefully going to be a permanent solace to the much needy invalid magic fraternity,'' the renowned magician pointed out.
