HC exempts Vijaykant from personal appearance in cheating case
Madurai, July 27 (UNI) The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has dispensed with the personal appearance of filmstar and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) President Vijaykant in a cheating case filed before a magistrate at Srivilliputtur in Virudhunagar district.
Mr Justice R Reghupathy, admitting a petition moved by the actor-politician, also ordered issuance of notice to the complainant, P Mariammal, proprietor of a film distribution firm, Selva Nandhini Pictures, to file the counter.
The distributor, in her case pending before the magistrate had charged the actor, now a legislator, with reneging the commitment to pay the loss of Rs 26 lakh suffered by her in screening the film Vijaykant starrer, 'Narasimha'.
The magistrate had directed the actor, second accused in the case, to appear in person in the court.
Challenging this, Mr Vijaykant had moved the Bench and contended that he was not the proprietor of Captain Cine Creations, with which the complainant had entered into an agreement. Further, he was in no way connected with the transaction, made six years ago, he added.
The petitioner also submitted that no evidence linking him with the said company had been produced.
